what is deaf young life?

Deaf Young Life (DYL) is part of the greater international organization Young Life (YL). In 2017, Emma Rudkin began the pilot program for DYL here in San Antonio to reach deaf and hard of hearing high schoolers. DYL is one of 12 youth ministries which serve the deaf students in the US. Our program in San Antonio is one of two YL ministries that serves Deaf students in the world.

the mission 

Just like other Young Life ministries, DYL connects with teenagers through 4 different avenues. 

• Contact work: Going where kids are and spending time with them to build a trusting foundation of friendship. 
• Club: A weekly gathering we like to call a “party with a purpose.” A time full of fun and games and before all the fun ends we share about the greatest story ever told: the Gospel. 
• Camp: The best week of a teenagers life! It’s a time full of deep relationship building, the most beautiful scenery, incredible fun, and a place where kids hear about Jesus who can change everything for them. 
• Campaigners: Weekly gatherings for those who wish to grow deeper in their faith and understanding of the Bible. We are with students for not only their decision of faith, but the discipleship journey as well.

how do we do it?

Were DYL differs from other YL ministries is how we make these things accessible to teenagers with various levels of hearing loss and communication preferences. DYL makes the gospel accessible through the use of real-time captioning and sign language interpreters at club, camp, and campaigners meetings. DYL leaders are either deaf or fluent in American Sign Language. DYL provides the opportunity for teens to experience the Gospel and interact with others who share the same story of hearing loss.
